Before thinking to ban China imports, India should encourage manufacturing competiveness in the domestic sectors. This is a long term process. If India boycotts China products it will decrease the productivity of the domestic sector. And high cost will affect Indian consumers. As domestic sector is heavily depends on cheap products manufactured by China, it takes time to get alternative supplies for India. Suddenly switching to alternative supplies uninterruptedly is not the possible option now. It takes few years to achieve its goal ‘self-reliance’ for India.
The more worrying factor is that China companies like Alibaba and Tencent and others invested in many start- ups like Zomato, Paytm, Byju’s, Ola and others. The Indian government should carefully think through the consequences of any policy action that it decides to pursue. Policy cannot be made by knee-jerk reactions. Policy should flow from careful cost benefit analysis.
