Member of National Commission for Safai Karmachari Dr. P.P. Vava held a meeting regarding Safai Karmacharis in BBMP limits at New Kumara Krupa Guest House hall 1, today. 

Dr Vava instructed the officers to work on a policy to help the livelihood of manual scavengers who are without jobs and homes by enabling them with permanent professional ways such as milk booths, Hopcoms and other services in the city. 

He said that the Central Government has prohibited manual scavengers from woking in sewage/defecation pits. Efforts must be taken by the government to arrange for the livelihood of manual scavengers. Their livelihood would improve if the arrangements such as helping them set up a milk booth, hop coms and other services. Therefore, a policy should be created to benefit the manual scavengers, he opined. 

Chief Commissioner of BBMP Shri Gaurav Gupta Sia that around 17,000 labourers are under direct wage in BBMP limits. Excluding permanent Paurakarmikas, those Paurakarmikas working on a contract basis are being paid salaries on the 7th day of the month under the direct wage system, he said. All citizens are given the same uniform and safety equipment. Frequent disinfectant spraying is done in Paurakarmika colonies and a health camp is conducted every three months, he added. The dependents of Paurakarmikas who have lost lives while working in BBMP are given Rs 10 lakh compensation.

Former member of the National Commission for Safai Karmachari Jagdish Hiremani, Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta, Special Commissioners Harish Kumar, Ravindra, Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste) Sarfaraj Khan, Superintendent Engineer (Solid Waste) Basavaraj Kabade and other officers were present.
